MSU drops a 41-21 decision.
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State dropped a 41-21 decision to No. 5 Georgia on Saturday afternoon at Davis Wade Stadium.
MSU got off to a fast start, but was unable to sustain momentum against the Southeastern Conference's other set of Bulldogs.
MSU took the opening drive 75 yards over a 5:34 span. Quarterback Blake Shapen started his day completing his first five passes for 37 yards before State capped off its scoring drive with a four-yard quarterback keeper from Kamario Taylor for an early 7-0 edge.
On the following drive, Georgia split the uprights with a 49-yard field goal to dig into State's lead. Then, later in the first, UGA was knocking on the door of more points before MSU safety Isaac Smith forced a fumble at the 3-yard line and recovered to turn the ball back over to State.
At the end of the first quarter, it was Georgia forcing a fumble and taking over in State territory at the 27-yard line. UGA would capitalize at the beginning of the second period with a lead-taking four-yard touchdown run to go up 10-7.
Georgia continued its momentum throughout the remainder of the first half, adding 14 more points to take a 24-7 advantage going into the locker room.
The third quarter was no different as Georgia kept its foot on the gas pedal, adding 14 points to the lead in just over five minutes. Taylor was able to find the endzone two more times at the goal line in the second half, but it wasn't enough for MSU to prevail.
For the day, Shapen turned in 101 total yards of offense before exiting the game in the third quarter. Taylor finished with 87 passing yards along with 53 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground.
Defensively, safety Brylan Lanier led State with seven total tackles including a tackle for loss.
