Bulldogs drop a 39-20 decision to the Tigers.
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State got off to a fast start and captured an early lead but was unable to sustain momentum as the Bulldogs fell 39-20 to Missouri on Saturday as MSU wrapped up the home portion of its 2024 schedule.
State running back Davon Booth rushed for 124 yards and a touchdown and quarterback Michael Van Buren Jr. threw for 191 yards and a score, but it wasn't enough for the Dawgs.
In the contest's opening moments, it appeared MSU might seize control. The Bulldogs received the opening kickoff and used a nine-play, 61-yard drive to set up a 38-yard Kyle Ferrie field goal for a 3-0 lead.
Later in the quarter, State looked to increase its advantage when the Dawg offense found itself on the Missouri 30-yard line and threatening. However, a State fumble resulted in a Missouri scoop-and-score for 68-yard touchdown and the Tigers led the rest of the way.
A pair of Bulldogs cracked the 50-yard mark in receiving in the defeat. Kelly Akharaiyi led the way with 64 yards while Kevin Coleman Jr. totaled 58. Jordan Mosley accounted for 28 yards and also had a touchdown catch.
On the defensive side for State, four Dawgs reached the double-figure mark in tackles, led by Stone Blanton's 18 takedowns. Isaac Smith notched 14 tackles while Nic Mitchell tallied 11 and Corey Ellington had 10.
