MSU drops 26-14 decision to No. 14 Ole Miss in the annual Egg Bowl.
OXFORD, Miss. – Mississippi State put a lid on its 2024 football season on Friday after dropping a 26-14 decision to No. 14 Ole Miss at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in the annual Battle for the Golden Egg.
Bulldog quarterback Michael Van Buren Jr. threw for 280 yards and accounted for two touchdowns, Kevin Coleman Jr. racked up 118 yards receiving with a score and MSU went to the fourth quarter down just six points, but Ole Miss was able to hold on.
It was a back-and-forth affair for much of the contest. After Ole Miss began the scoring early in the first quarter on a Caden Davis 39-yard field goal, Mississippi State quickly responded when Van Buren hit Coleman on a 34-yard touchdown strike to give the Bulldogs a 7-3 lead.
Ole Miss soon regained the advantage at 10-7 on a short run from JJ Pegues, but on the final play of the opening period, Van Buren turned to his legs and put the Dawgs up 14-10 on a six-yard scoring rush.
Midway through the second quarter, Ole Miss surged back in front 17-14 courtesy of a Ulysses Bentley run and that score held into halftime.
The Rebels doubled their lead to 20-14 with a third-quarter field goal by Davis, then, with just under 10 minutes remaining in the game, Ole Miss found the end zone one last time when Jaxson Dart found Caden Prieskorn on a touchdown toss to set the game's final margin.
