FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Mississippi State's defense put a stranglehold on the Arkansas offense as the Bulldogs earned a 7-3 win on Saturday at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium. MSU held the Razorbacks to just 200 total yards to earn a second-straight victory.
Arkansas mounted only 78 yards of offense in the first half as Mississippi State captured a lead it never relinquished.
The Razorbacks did strike first in the contest. Following an interception on the first drive of the game, Arkansas drove to the MSU 6-yard line. State held strong though, allowing only a 24-yard field goal by Cam Little.
It was a theme that held all game as State's defense smothered the Razorbacks. Linebackers Nathaniel Watson and Jett Johnson led the group. Watson led MSU with 14 tackles and also had a pair of sacks. Johnson tallied 11 total stops.
Corey Ellington and Decamerion Richardson also recorded sacks for State. The Bulldogs also recorded a couple of takeaways courtesy of an interception by Shawn Preston, Jr. and a fumble recovery from DeShawn Page.
State's lone touchdown of the day provided the difference in the contest. It came early in the second quarter as the Bulldogs polished off an impressive nine-play, 69-yard drive with a 2-yard scoring toss from quarterback Mike Wright to Jo'Quavious Marks.
Wright, starting in place of an injured Will Rogers, finished with 85 passing yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for a team-high 60 yards.
