Dawgs Top Dirtbags in Series Finale

STARKVILLE – No. 3-ranked Mississippi State (1-2) notched its first victory of the 2022 campaign with a 12-4 win over No. 24 Long Beach State (2-1) in the series finale on Sunday at Dudy Noble Field.
A dominant pitching performance by Cade Smith led to the eight-run victory for the Dawgs. Smith shut out Long Beach State for the first five innings, allowing just one hit and leaving the game in the sixth with a runner on base who eventually scored. Smith (1-0) earned the win on the mound after surrendering a run on one hit and striking out six in 5.2 innings. Brandon Smith, Brooks Auger and Mikey Tepper pitched the final 3.1 innings for the Dawgs.
Long Beach State combined to use six pitchers in the contest with starter Juaron Watts-Brown (0-1) being charged with the loss after allowing three runs on four hits and striking out seven.
MSU used a two-run home run by Matt Corder to take an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second and tacked on one in the third when Kamren James singled and later scored on a groundout by Logan Tanner.
The bats got even hotter in the fifth when State plated seven runs on six hits, followed by two more runs in the sixth on a pinch-hit, two-run home run by Tanner Leggett to make it a 12-2 game. LBSU plated one run in the seventh and another in the ninth before the Dawgs closed out the Sunday victory.
Offensively, the Diamond Dawgs out-hit LBSU with 16 hits compared to eight hits by the Dirtbags. Corder led the way with a 2-for-3 day with a home run, three RBI, a walk and two runs scored. Five different Bulldogs recorded multi-hit games, with Kamren James, Luke Hancock, Logan Tanner and Drew McGowan joining Corder with two hits apiece.

RJ Yeager earned a leadoff walk to start the bottom half of the second, followed by a two-run home run to left field by Matt Corder to put the Dawgs ahead, 2-0, through two innings.

Kamren James led off the inning with an inning single, stole second base and then reached third on a balk by LBSU pitcher Juaron Watts-Brown. James came around to score two batters later when Logan Tanner drove him in on a ground ball to shortstop, extending the Dawgs lead to 3-0 over the Dirtbags.

Hunter Hines singled up the middle to drive in two runs. Matt Corder singled to second base to score Logan Tanner. Brad Cumbest singled through the left side, scoring Hines. Drew McGowan drove in two runs with a single through the right side. Kamren James drove in the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Cumbest.
