Dawgs Take Down UAPB, 17-1, In Midweek Action

STARKVILLE – The Mississippi State baseball team moved to 2-2 on the season after putting up 17 runs on 13 hits in a 17-1 run-rule victory over UAPB (0-4) in an early Tuesday matchup at Dudy Noble Field in Starkville.

State scored eight runs in the first to set the tone and tacked on runs in four of the next five innings to complete the offensive output on Tuesday. Tanner Leggett hit his second home run of the season in a 2-for-3 effort that saw him drive in three runs and score two on the day. Davis Meche also left the yard with his first home run of the season, while Luke Hancock and Jess Davis each tallied two hits apiece for the Dawgs.

On the mound, Jackson Fristoe (1-0) picked up the win after starting and allowing one run on four hits and striking out six in 4.0 innings of work. Andrew Walling came on to pitch a scoreless fifth before being replaced by Pico Kohn in sixth. Kohn struck out three and allowed just one hit in two innings of relief in his first outing in the Maroon and White.

UAPB used four pitchers on the day with starter Mike Gerwitz being charged with the loss after allowing eight runs on five hits and walking two before being relieved in the first inning.

Offensively for the Dawgs, Lane Forsythe and Meche each drove in two runs apiece, while Logan Tanner, RJ Yeager, Brad Cumbest and Drew McGowan each had one hit in the midweek contest.
