STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State women's tennis is set for a busy stretch of non-conference action, hosting a four-match homestand at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre with doubleheaders scheduled for Friday, Feb. 6, and Sunday, Feb. 8.
The Bulldogs are set to have two doubleheaders over the weekend. On Friday, State will be up against Georgia Southern at 1 p.m. and Alcorn State at 4 p.m. then back at it on Sunday with Louisiana Tech at 12 p.m. and Bellarmine at 3 p.m.
MSU enters the weekend with their past three matches being canceled due to weather. The Bulldogs are looking to continue their non-conference success under head coach Chris Hoosyar, posting a 22–3 mark across his first two seasons, after sweeping their season opener against UAB and Samford.
Doubles duo of Gianna Oboniye and Charlotte Kempenaers-Pocz are ranked No. 9 in the ITA Doubles Rankings. The duo finished the fall at the seventh slot but has yet to finish a doubles match this season.
Georgia Southern will be coming to Starkville for the first time in series history and will be playing each other for only the second time. The Bulldogs defeated the Eagles in their first meeting 7-2 back in 1984. MSU remains unbeaten against Alcorn State, owning a 10-0 series record. In last season's meeting, State earned a 7-0 shutout as the doubles team of Athina Pitta and Oboniye helped secure the doubles point. Returners Alessia Tagliente and Chiara Di Genova followed with singles victories to help seal the match.
Louisiana Tech will be making its way back to the maroon and white campus after not being on site since 1986. State is 4-1 against the opposing bulldogs with their last meeting being a 6-0 victory. LA Tech is coming off a home win against Southeast Missouri 5-2. Bellarmine will be taking a trip from their Friday match at Bowling Green to play against the Bulldogs Sunday afternoon. Last season, MSU collected a win against the Knights 4-0 in Starkville. The Bulldogs had an early lead collecting the doubles point with double pairs of Tagliente/ Di Genova and Oboniye/ Pitta. Oboniye and Di Genova followed by adding a singles win to finish the match.
During the weekend, fan experience will be having a giveaway for a Valentines Day dinner at Taste for two.
