DURHAM, N.C. – After a tight 4-3 setback Saturday, the Mississippi State women's tennis squad fought back into the win column with a 4-2 victory over Kansas State Sunday on the final day of the 2020 ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
"It was a solid performance by our girls today," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "We came out on fire in doubles and carried that momentum into the singles. KSU is an experienced team and they sure didn't go away when we built the lead. It was a big challenge for us coming off a heartbreaking loss yesterday. I am happy with the way our girls responded. It was especially important for our two true freshmen Alex and Marta to pick up impressive wins today after losses yesterday. It was definitely a solid team effort and our best performance so far this spring."
With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 4-1 overall while KSU fell to 1-2. State now owns a 2-0 lead over the Wildcats in the series, with the only other meeting coming in 1992.
The Bulldogs claimed the opening doubles point with ease Sunday morning. No. 43 Magda Adaloglou and Tamara Racine earned their first ranked victory of 2020, shutting out the 54th-ranked Wildcat tandem of Margot Decker and Anna Turco 6-0 at the No. 1 position. State's sophomore-freshman duo of Emma Antonaki and Alexandra Mikhailuk – ranked 45thnationally – followed suit by cruising past KSU's Lilla Barzo and Maria Linares 6-1 on court 2. At No. 3, MSU's Marta Falceto and Sara Lizariturry were tied 3-3 with Karine-Marion Job and Ines Mesquita when play was suspended.
In singles, State established a quick 3-0 lead in the match with straight-set victories at the top and bottom of the lineup. On court 1, MSU's 84th-ranked Antonaki made quick work of KSU's Linares 6-2, 6-2. The true freshman Falceto then prevailed over Ioana Gheorghita of Kansas State in a 6-2, 6-3 decision on court 6.
Three of the last four matches on court would go to third sets, making for a close finish down the stretch.
Kansas State recorded the next two points on courts 3 and 5 to cut the score to 3-2. At No. 3, MSU's Adaloglou dropped a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 decision to Wildcat Margot Decker. On court 5, rookie Bulldog Valeria Nikolaev fell to KSU's Ines Mesquita 6-3, 7-5.
The Bulldogs would get the clincher at the No. 4 spot from another true freshman. After dropping the first set 6-3 to KSU's Rosanna Maffei, Mikhailuk stormed back, losing only one game the rest of the way to claim a 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 triumph and hand MSU the win. It was Mikhailuk's second match-clincher for the Maroon and White early on this spring.
The last match on court was suspended with KSU's Turco holding a 5-3, third-set lead on MSU's Racine.
The Bulldogs will travel to Oxford, Mississippi, to face Texas Tech and Baylor next weekend (Feb. 1-2) in neutral site affairs on the Ole Miss campus. Saturday's match against Texas Tech is set to begin at 12 p.m. CT, while Sunday's contest with Baylor is set for 1 p.m. Both matches will be played at UM's Galtney Indoor Tennis Center.
