Weed Holds Share Of Lead After Opening Day In Belleair
April 17, 2026 | Women's Golf
BELLEAIR, Fla. – 16th-ranked Mississippi State women's golf used a strong back nine to climb out of an early deficit, finishing the first round of the SEC Championship in a tie for seventh at even par.
The Bulldogs were led by sensational junior Avery Weed, who played a bogey-free opening 18 holes on Friday. She added four birdies to her card, giving her a share of the individual lead at 4-under. It was the lowest round Weed has shot in her three seasons of playing in the SEC Championship at Pelican Golf club.
This was Weed's 18th par or better round of the season and the 49th of her career. It was also her eighth round in the 60s of the season, a mark that is now the fifth-most in a single season in program history.
The Bulldogs started slow in the beginning of the day, sitting towards the bottom of the leaderboard at the turn. After starting the back nine, the four Mississippi State counting scores collected a total of 11 birdies to go against four bogeys to get back even before the end of the day. The Bulldogs sit three strokes above what would be the cutline of 3-over entering the second day of action.
Moa Stridh played a big part in helping the Bulldogs regain momentum at the end of the round. Stridh sat at 4-over par entering her final six holes. She picked up a birdie on hole 13 and ended her day with three-consecutive birdies to get back even. Stridh sits right outside of the top 20 entering the second day of action.
The Bulldogs will continue into the second round of the SEC Championship tomorrow, beginning the day at 7:50 a.m. CT. Live scoring is available at scoreboard.clippd.com.
