Ferrie’s Foot Breaks 40-Year-Old Bulldog Record

State junior kicker now owns the longest field goal in MSU history.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The kick was up. The kick was good. Just like that, Kyle Ferrie went where no Mississippi State Bulldog had gone before.
It was late in the first quarter of MSU's season opener at Southern Miss on Saturday. State was looking to stretch an early lead and called on its junior placekicker, Ferrie, to do just that.
With a big swing of his left leg, Ferrie connected from 55 yards out, making it look easy in the process. He split the uprights and had quite a bit of distance to spare.
The make was the longest in Mississippi State football history, eclipsing a 40-year-old school record. The previous long was a 54-yarder made by Artie Cosby all the way back in 1985.
Perhaps Ferrie's big boot should've come as no surprise. Head coach Jeff Lebby was already singing Ferrie's praises ahead of Saturday's action.
"He's been really, really consistent so I'm excited about him," Lebby said of Ferrie a few days ago. "He did a really good job in camp and had a great spring as well. He's taken that next step and the kid has got a bunch of pop, got a big leg and been really consistent. So, I'm looking forward to him being able to step out there and have a big impact."
Ferrie's impact was indeed big throughout Saturday's action. In addition to his record breaker, Ferrie connected on a 30-yarder that gave MSU a lead it'd never relinquish, plus made all four of his extra-point attempts to help the Bulldogs roll to the 34-17 victory over the Golden Eagles.
Ferrie has now made 32 straight extra points and is 69-for-70 on PATs in his career. He's 28-for-36 on field goal tries since he burst onto the scene as a true freshman in 2023 and won a pair of Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week awards.
If Saturday's historic performance was any indication, Ferrie might find himself with more honors coming his way in the not-too-distant future.
"Was excited to see [Ferrie] go do exactly what he's done in practice," Lebby said following Saturday's game. "That was good. That can be a weapon for us. He's going to be big for us."
