February 10, 2024 | Women's Tennis
MEMPHIS, Tenn., - Mississippi State is the last undefeated women's tennis team remaining in the Southeastern Conference.
The Bulldogs will put their perfect 6-0 record on the line at noon on Sunday when they travel to Memphis for their first road test of the year.
The Chris Hooshyar era is off to an incredible start, posting the best record by any head coach in their first year in program history. Hooshyar established the new benchmark last weekend with a 4-3 win over UAB and then expanded upon it with a 6-1 victory against Jackson State and another 4-3 triumph versus Belmont.
MSU's lineup features the reigning SEC Freshman of the Week in Jayna Clemens. The Lewisville, Texas native boasts a flawless singles record during dual match play. Clemens went 3-0 in singles last weekend and also added a doubles win as well.
Senior Alexandra Mikhailuk also maintains a spotless record in singles this spring at 6-0 while junior Maria Rizzolo tops the team with a 10-5 overall singles record on the year.
Memphis is 4-3 on the season and coming off a 4-0 loss at Iowa on Friday. The Tigers are 1-1 against SEC opponents this year posting a 4-2 win at home against Ole Miss last month and falling at No. 22 Vanderbilt 4-0 on Feb. 3.
State owns a 20-7 overall lead in the series, including an 8-3 mark on the road. The Bulldogs have won 17 straight against Memphis and have not lost to the Tigers since 1982.
Mississippi State won 4-1 over Memphis last season in Starkville. Mikhailuk, Rizzolo and Chloé Cirotte all contributed victories during last year's win.
