Mississippi State Faces Georgia Tech In Battle Of Unbeatens For 2024 SEC/ACC Challenge

ATLANTA – Mississippi State women's basketball travels to Atlanta, Ga. to battle Georgia Tech inside McCamish Pavilion for the 2024 SEC/ACC Challenge on Wednesday, Dec. 4. at 6:15 p.m. CT.Â

It is the second-straight season that Mississippi State has started 8-0 under Head Coach Sam Purcell and a 9-0 start would tie the best mark since 2018-19. Mississippi State and Georgia Tech are two of 22 undefeated teams remaining in Division-I women's basketball.

Mississippi State last played and defeated Georgia Tech in the first round of the inaugural 2024 Women's Basketball Invitational Tournament, 84-47, inside Humphrey Coliseum on March 21, 2024. Mississippi State last tipped off inside McCamish Pavilion, in which it earned a 62-56 win, on Dec. 30, 2006.Â

Purcell spent six seasons at Georgia Tech from 2007-13, initially in a video coordinator role before transitioning to assistant coach. Junior guard Denim DeShields is from Atlanta, Ga. while Purcell hails from Dalton, Ga., which is around 89 miles outside of Atlanta.

Mississippi State has won 15 of its last 16 non-conference games dating back to the 2023-24 season. The Bulldogs are 36-6 in non-conference games under Purcell.
Mississippi State's defensive excellence remains a focal point through the first quarter of the season. Mississippi State currently ranks first in the nation in both scoring defense at 45.9 points per game and field-goal percentage defense at 28.3 percent from the field. The Bulldogs are eighth nationally and second in the SEC in three-point field-goal percentage defense, limiting opponents to 21.4 percent from behind the arc, through eight games.
Mississippi State has held seven of its eight opponents to its lowest point total this season. The Bulldogs have held six opponents under 30.0 percent from the field this season – Memphis 27.1, Alcorn State 28.3 and Alabama State 22.4, Chattanooga 27.1, Mercer 27.8 and Jacksonville 18.9.
Mississippi State has forced 16 or more turnovers in seven games, including 26 against Alabama State on Nov. 13, which was the most since the Bulldogs forced 30 against Texas A&M-Commerce on Dec. 11, 2022. Mississippi State is averaging 22.4 points off turnovers in 2024-25.Â
Junior guard/forward Debreasha Powe is simply one of the nation's best from three-point range. Powe is connecting on a SEC-best 52.5 percent from three (21-40) and 52.5 percent from the field (31-59) in 30.2 minutes per game in 2024-25. Her 52.5 percent from three not only leads the SEC, but stands ninth nationally. Powe is one of eight P4 players converting on 50.0 percent or better from three.Â
