Mississippi State Travels To Face Jacksonville In WBCA State Farm Showcase

STARKVILLE – Mississippi State women's basketball travels for the first time in 2024-25 when it heads to Orlando, Fla. to face Jacksonville in the inaugural 2024 WBCA State Farm Showcase inside the State Farm Field House at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 2:30 p.m. CT. The game will be aired on the NBC Sports FAST Channel.

It is the second-straight season that Mississippi State has started 5-0 under Head Coach Sam Purcell. Mississippi State had a Purcell-best 8-0 start to its season in 2023-24. Mississippi State's unblemished start to its schedule will now be tested as it will be away from Humphrey Coliseum for over a month until it returns on Dec. 29.

Purcell earned the 50th win of his career when Mississippi State defeated Mercer, 81-44, last time out on Wednesday, Nov. 20. Purcell became the fastest head coach to 50 wins at Mississippi State, reaching the mark in 73 games, which stands eight faster than the next.Â
This is the first-ever meeting between Mississippi State and Jacksonville. Mississippi State is 8-1 in non-conference neutral-site games under Purcell. Mississippi State has won 12 of its last 13 non-conference games overall dating back to the 2023-24 season.Â

The defense has been the calling card for Mississippi State through its first five games. Mississippi State ranks first in the nation in both scoring defense at 43.6 points per game and field-goal percentage defense at 26.7 percent from the field. The Bulldogs also rank 23rd nationally and second in the SEC in three-point field-goal percentage defense at 22.4 percent from behind the arc.
Mississippi State stands first in the nation with a 31.2 percent effective field-goal percentage defense and third with a 29.6 percent two-point field-goal percentage defense. Mississippi State has held all five opponents under 30.0 percent from the field this season (Memphis 27.1, Alcorn State 28.3 and Alabama State 22.4, Chattanooga 27.1 and Mercer 27.8).Â

The Bulldogs are also averaging 24.8 points off turnovers through its first five games.Â
The emergence of junior guard/forward Debreasha Powe has been a huge positive for Mississippi State. Powe was one of three players in the SEC in 2023-24 and the latest Mississippi State player since Andra Espinoza-Hunter in 2018-19 to knock down 65-plus threes on a 40.0 percent or better rate. She has improved on that already impressive mark and is currently connecting on 54.2 percent from three (13-24) and 59.0 percent from the field (23-39) in 2024-25. Her 54.2 percent from three is third in the SEC and 25th nationally and she is one of three players in the conference connecting on 50.0 percent or better from behind the arc. In addition to her three-point prowess, Powe is averaging 12.0 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.6 steals, 1.0 blocks in 29.2 minutes per game in 2024-25.Â
