Chattanooga won the Southern Conference regular season and tournament title and earned a No. 14 seed in the 2024 NCAA Tournament, where it fell in the first round to No. 3 seed NC State.Â
Â
Mississippi State is receiving seven votes in the week two edition of the Associated Press Top-25 poll that was released on Nov. 11 and three more in the USA Today Coaches Top-25 poll on Nov. 12.Â
Â
Chattanooga enters Sunday with a 2-2 record after it fell to Troy, 76-66, at home on Friday, Nov. 14. Head Coach Deandra Schirmer is in her first season at the helm of the Mocs after five seasons at Valdosta State.Â
Â
Mississippi State is off to a 3-0 start after playing three games in six days to open its schedule. Mississippi State defeated Alabama State, 83-29, last time out inside Humphrey Coliseum on Wednesday, Nov. 13.Â
Â
Mississippi State's defense has propelled it through the early portion of the season. The Bulldogs are allowing 43.4 points per game on 26.2 percent from the field and 25.7 percent from three through their first three games in 2024-25.Â
Â
Mississippi State has held all three opponents under 30.0 percent from the field this season (Memphis 27.1, Alcorn State 28.3 and Alabama State 22.4). Mississippi State only allowed a program-record one point in the third quarter against Alabama State on Nov. 13. The 29 points allowed to Alabama State on Nov. 13 was the fifth-lowest total allowed to an opponent in program history.Â
Â
Mississippi State has forced 20 or more turnovers in two of its first three games, including 26 against Alabama State on Nov. 13, which is the most since the Bulldogs forced 30 against Texas A&M-Commerce on Dec. 11, 2022.
Mississippi State improved to 20-1 in non-conference home games inside Humphrey Coliseum under Purcell. Mississippi State has won 10 of its last 11 non-conference games, excluding the SEC Tournament, dating back to the 2023-24 season. Mississippi State is 31-6 overall in such games over the last two seasons.
Â
Now in his third season at the helm, Purcell is the only head coach in program history and one of six in SEC women's basketball since 2000 to record consecutive seasons with 20 or more wins in each of their first two seasons. He totaled the most overall wins (45 - 10 more than the next), most SEC wins (17 - 7 more than the next) and most NCAA Tournament wins (2 - no other head coach has recorded one) of any head coach through their first two seasons in program history.
Â
With a 3-0 start, Purcell is now two wins away from 50 for his career and at Mississippi State. With a 5-0 start, which would come with a win against Mercer on Wednesday, Nov. 20, he would be the fastest coach in program history to reach 50 wins at Mississippi State, achieving the mark in 73 games, eight games faster than the next.Â
