
Dawgs Travel South for In-State Match at Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG – The unbeaten Mississippi State soccer program sets to make the two-hour drive south for a contest against Southern Miss (0-3). Thursday's match (Sept. 8) will kickoff at 4 p.m. CT on ESPN+.

"We are excited to get on the road and spend some time together," head coach James Armstrong said. "Southern Miss will prove an exciting challenge for us tomorrow."

Thursday's meeting will be the 13th overall, with State holding the series lead, 8-2-2. It will be the first meeting between the programs since 2018 where MSU won, 3-0.

Southern Miss enters Thursday after having most-recently lost to fellow SEC West opponent, LSU, 3-1. The Golden Eagles were able to keep the game scoreless in the first half and would tie the game at 1 in the 53rd minute. LSU would put up two more goals over the next 16 minutes. MSU, meanwhile, is gearing up for its second road trip of the season. State went 3-0-1 in its two-week homestand and enters Thursday unbeaten through its first six games. Three different players are tied for the team-lead in goals (2), and four different Dawgs have recorded double-digit shots.

After trailing for the first time all season, MSU netted two goals in the second half to top LA Tech, 2-1. It marked the fourth win of the season, for State and the first in come-from-behind fashion. Sophomore Hannah Johnson scored her first collegiate goal to tie the game, before fellow sophomore Haley McWhirter's rocket from distance put the Dawgs on top for good. The game-winner was the second goal of the season for McWhirter.
