Two Second Half Goals Propel MSU to Fifth Win of Season
September 08, 2022 | Soccer
HATTIESBURG – For the second consecutive game, the Mississippi State soccer program scored two goals in the second half to top Southern Miss (0-4), 2-0. The fifth win of the season keeps State's unbeaten streak alive after the first seven games of the year. The fifth shutout of the season moves junior goalkeeper Maddy Anderson into a tie for second, overall, on the MSU career shutouts list with 11 total.
"It's always nice to get a win on the road versus a quality opponent," head coach James Armstrong said. "We [as a staff] were proud of the defensive effort tonight and the number of chances we were able to create. The two goals were both quality finishes. We are looking forward to getting back to work tomorrow."
For the fourth consecutive match, State entered the half knotted at 0 with its opponent. Three of MSU's five first-half shots were registered on goal. However, the Bulldogs would use the second half to their advantage, scoring two goals over the Golden Eagles seven minutes apart. The two second-half goals marked the third time in the last four outings that State's goals came in the second frame of the game.
In the 54th minute, freshman Maggie Wadsworth would put State up by one off an assist from sophomore Haley McWhirter. The goal is now the third of Wadsworth's career and is also her third career game-winner. Seven minutes later, McWhirter would net her third career goal as a Bulldog, her second in as many games. Junior Elle McCaslin's first career assist on the play would be the insurance State needed to secure the win.
State improves to 5-0-2 to stay unbeaten in non-conference play. The Bulldogs will return to action Sunday, Sept. 11, as they return home for a contest against Presbyterian College (0-4-2). The final, non-conference match of the season will kick off at 1 p.m. CT.
