MSU Bats Explode in 19-2 Victory Over Tulane
March 05, 2022 | Baseball
The series continues at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, in New Orleans
The Diamond Dawgs put up runs in six separate innings, including a 4-run fourth inning and a 9-run fifth inning that broke the game wide open. The 19 runs by MSU is the most since State defeated UAB, 19-7, on April 20, 2021. The 17-run margin of victory is the most since the Dawgs topped North Alabama by a score of 18-1 on March 24, 2021.
Every Diamond Dawg starter reached base in the victory as MSU cranked out 17 hits on the night, the most since May 22, 2019, when State had 18 hits in a win over LSU. MSU sent 14 batters to the plate in the 9-run fifth inning and notched eight of its 17 hits in that inning alone.
MSU starter Landon Sims was dominant on the mound, striking out 10 of the 11 batters he faced and not allowing a baserunner in 3.2 innings before having to leave the game in the fourth. Brandon Smith (1-0) came on in relief of Sims and earned the win after holding the Green Wave to one run on three hits and striking out two in 3.1 innings. Cam Tullar pitched the eighth and allowed a run on one hit and a walk before Drew Talley closed out the game with three strikeouts in the ninth.
Tulane used a total of seven pitchers on the night with starter Tyler Hoffman (0-2) being charged with the loss after allowing six runs – five earned – on seven hits in 3.2 innings.
Seven different Diamond Dawgs recorded multi-hit games, including Kellum Clark (2-for-4, HR, 3 RBIs) and Hunter Hines (2-for-5, HR, 2B, 3 RBIs) who each had home runs in the contest. Luke Hancock, Kamren James, Logan Tanner and Brad Cumbest each drove in two runs in the series-opening victory.
