Dawgs Fall To Tulane To Even Series At 1-1
March 05, 2022 | Baseball
The rubber match is slated for 1 p.m. on. Sunday, March 6, in New Orleans
Mississippi State led 10-3 entering the bottom of the seventh before Tulane plated five runs in the inning on four hits, including a grand slam that cut MSU's lead to two. The score remained 10-8 in favor of the Diamond Dawgs until the bottom of the ninth when Tulane plated two runs on a sacrifice fly to deep right field to tie the game at 10 runs apiece.
Luke Hancock led off the top of the 10th with a double to left-center and reached third on a pair of two-out walks, but a strikeout ended the threat for State and allowed Tulane to walk it off with a solo home run by Groff in the bottom half of the inning.
MSU starter Preston Johnson received a no decision after striking out nine and allowing three runs on six hits in six complete innings. Jack Walker came on in relief in the seventh and allowed five runs on four hits before Brooks Auger came in and closed out the inning. Stone Simmons came in and pitched a clean eighth inning, followed by Parker Stinnett who came on in the ninth and allowed two runs on a pair of walks. Mikey Tepper (0-1) was the final State pitcher of the day and was charged with the loss after closing out the ninth and pitching the final inning.
Tulane reliever Zach DeVito (2-0) earned the win after holding MSU scoreless on one hit and a pair of walks in the 10th inning. Dylan Carmouche started for the Green Wave and allowed 10 runs – nine earned – on nine hits while walking four and striking out three in 4.0 innings. Grant Siegel came on in relief in the fifth and held the Dawgs scoreless on three hits while striking out five in 5.0 innings.
Offensively, Mississippi State totaled 13 hits in the contest compared to 11 by the Green Wave. Logan Tanner led the way with a 3-for-5 effort at the plate with six RBIs driven in thanks to a grand slam in the second and a double later in the game. Freshman Hunter Hines was 3-for-4 on the day and scored two runs, while Kellum Clark left the yard for the second time this weekend with a solo home run in the third. Hancock and RJ Yeager each had two hits apiece in the contest.
