No. 40 Mississippi State Drops 4-1 Decision To No. 27 Ole Miss
April 02, 2021 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE – The 40th-ranked Mississippi State women's tennis team grabbed an inspired doubles point early on but ultimately fell 4-1 to No. 27 Ole Miss in a tight rivalry battle Friday at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
With the setback, State dropped to 10-9, 2-9 in SEC play, while the Rebels improved to 9-7, 5-5 in conference play.
The Bulldogs drew first blood after winning an exciting doubles point to start the match. Chloé Cirotte and Alexandra Mikhailuk made quick work of the Rebels' duo Lillian Gabrielsen and Tereza Janatova, with a 6-2 triumph on court 3. State's 14th-ranked tandem of Magda Adaloglou and Tamara Racine then fell by the same 6-2 score to Alexa Bortles and Anna Vrbenska at the top spot in the lineup.
The Bulldog duo of Emma Antonaki and Marta Falceto then fought back from 5-3 down, winning four consecutive games to oust Rebels Tiphanie Fiquet and Sabina Machalova 7-5 at the No. 2 position to clinch the doubles point and a 1-0 advantage for the Bulldogs.
Ole Miss then claimed four of the six first sets in singles, including three critical tiebreakers, and go on to eventually win the first four matches finished to clinch the team victory.
Reka Zadori evened the score for the Rebels at 1-1 as she downed MSU's Falceto 6-1, 6-0 on court 6. On court 3, MSU's Adaloglou saw her eight-match win streak come to an end when UM's 110th-ranked Janatova handed the 74th-ranked Bulldog a 7-6(5), 6-2 defeat.
MSU's Racine took the first set 6-4 with Ole Miss' No. 63 Fiquet at No. 2, but the Rebel fought back to claim the next two sets 6-1, 6-2 for a 3-1 UM advantage in the contest. State's Mikhailuk was one point shy of claiming the first set on court 4, but UM's Vrbenska pushed the set to a tiebreaker, where Mikhailuk ended up falling 7-6(4). Vrbenska went on to best Mikhailuk in a tight 7-6(4), 6-4 decision to clinch the victory for Ole Miss.
The remaining two matches were suspended at that point. State's 32nd-ranked Antonaki was battling the Rebels' 28th-ranked Machalova in a top 35 singles battle on court 1. Antonaki dropped a close first set 7-6(3) before convincingly taking the second 6-0. Machalova led 5-3 in the third when play was halted. MSU's true freshman Cirotte had rallied from a set down and led Ole Miss' Gabrielsen 2-6, 7-5, 4-1 at the No. 5 spot when play was suspended.
