STARKVILLE – After opening its 2020 Southeastern Conference season with a road victory Friday night, the Mississippi State women's tennis team returns home Sunday to play host to the No. 20 Vanderbilt Commodores. Match time is set for 1 p.m. at MSU's A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
State (7-3, 1-0 SEC) trails Vanderbilt (4-3, 0-1 SEC) 36-8 in the series. The Commodores claimed victory last season in a 4-1 decision in Nashville. In the last meeting in Starkville (2018), State snapped a 32-match Commodore win streak with a tight 4-3 win over then-No. 2 Vandy at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre. The victory marked the highest-ranked win in the history of MSU tennis (men's or women's).
The Bulldogs secured their first SEC victory of 2020 at Missouri in a convincing 4-1 triumph on Friday, in which sophomore Tamara Racine dominated at the No. 1 position with a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Junior Magda Adaloglou owns a four-match win streak heading into Sunday's matchup. She paces the team with seven wins in dual match play. Sophomore Emma Antonaki is State's lone ranked player, currently No. 122 in the country.
The freshman-senior duo of Marta Falceto and Sara Lizariturry lead the Bulldogs' duos and enter Sunday's match on a seven-match win streak, dating back to the fall campaign. The tandem owns a perfect 6-0 record at the No. 3 position.
Lizariturry's doubles victory alongside Falceto at Missouri enabled the senior to move into a three-way tie with Anastasia Kugakolova (2003-06) and Renee Joseph (2004-07) for the seventh-most combined wins (singles & doubles) in MSU program history. Lizariturry also moved into a tie for fifth with Elna DeVilliers (2005-09) for career doubles wins at MSU all-time.
No. 20 Vanderbilt is coming off a tough 4-3 setback to No. 36 LSU in Nashville in its league opener on Friday. VU is led by two top-50 singles players in No. 18 Christina Rosca and No. 31 Georgia Drummy.
