DURHAM, N.C. – The Mississippi State women's tennis squad was handed its first setback of the 2020 season in a nail-biter against Tulsa, 4-3, on Saturday in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend opener.
State clinched the doubles point after posting victories on courts 2 and 3. The 43rd-ranked duo of Magda Adaloglou and Tamara Racine fell at the top position in a 6-0 decision to Tulsa's No. 40 Martina Okalova and Vera Ploner. MSU's 45th-ranked pair of Emma Antonaki and Alexandra Mikhailuk responded by taking the next match by a 6-4 margin over Megan Hopton and Laia Conde Monfort at No. 2. On court three, State's Marta Falceto and Lizariturry secured the doubles point with a hard-fought 7-6(1) victory over TU's Elodie Foster and Shura Poppe.
In singles, the MSU junior Adaloglou made quick work of the Golden Hurricane's Ploner, taking the first singles match on court 3 6-1, 6-2 for a 2-0 MSU lead in the contest.
Tulsa battled back to 2-2 by claiming the next two matches off the court. The rookie Bulldog Falceto fell to Tulsa's Marina Davtyan 6-3, 6-0 on court 6, and State's 84th-ranked sophomore Antonaki dropped a 7-5, 6-2 decision to TU's 52nd-ranked Oklova at the top spot.
The Maroon and White went back on top at 3-2 when the sophomore Racine won a tough three-set battle over Tulsa's Poppe 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 at the No. 2 position.
But the Golden Hurricane would claim two three-set affairs on courts 4 and 5 to steal the match. Tulsa's Lian Benedejcic held off MSU freshman Valeria Nikolaev 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 at No. 5 before State newcomer Mikhailuk dropped a 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-4 decision to TU's Conde Monfort on court 4.
The Bulldogs will face either fifth-ranked host Duke or Kansas State in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend consolation match Sunday at 9 a.m. CT.
