TEMPE, Ariz. – Mississippi State women's tennis went undefeated, posting six victories, on day one of the 2019 Thunderbird Invitational Friday.
The Bulldogs kicked off the event with doubles action. In their first competition ever as a doubles team, Magda Adaloglou and Valeria Nikolaev defeated the combined Arizona State-Texas Tech duo of Savannah Slaysman and Isa Di Laura 6-4.
Emma Antonaki and Meredith Roberts, also competing together for the first time, followed suit and tallied a triumph against Texas Tech's Reagan Collins and Kennedy Bridgforth, also a 6-4 decision.
State kept that momentum rolling in singles, sweeping all four matches on the afternoon.
The 41st-ranked Antonaki defeated 75th-ranked Ilze Hattingh of host Arizona State in comeback fashion. After dropping the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6(5), the Bulldog sophomore rallied back to take the next two sets 6-4 and 6-1 to clinch her first ranked victory of the fall.
Nikolaev extended her win streak in singles to three, posting a convincing 6-2, 6-1 victory over Texas Tech's Reagan Collins.
Adaloglou – ranked 115th – came out on top over Texas Tech's Nell Miller 6-4, 6-3 before Roberts handed Di Laura, also of Texas Tech, a 6-3, 6-3 defeat.
