FIVE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT MISSISSIPPI STATE
1. The Bulldogs are looking for their second straight 3-0 start under head coach Ben Howland. Mississippi State has won 16 straight non-conference games and nine consecutive November games going back to the 2016-17 season with Howland at the helm. The last time the Bulldogs won their first three games of a season all by double figures was in 2013-14.
2. Quinndary Weatherspoon heads into Friday's action with 1,426 career pints which is 26 away from passing Charles Rhodes (2005-06-07-08) for 16th place on the all-time scoring list. The 1,426 points also leads SEC active scorers. Mississippi State is 16-2 overall and has won eight consecutive games over the last two seasons when Weatherspoon supplies 20 or more points.
3. With his first rebound and first block, Aric Holman will reach a pair of milestones on Friday. Holman will have secured 500 rebounds and 150 blocks. His 149 career blocks are sixth on Mississippi State's list and third among SEC active players. Holman also has notched 10 double-doubles which is second to South Carolina's Chris Silva on the SEC active list.
4. Nick Weatherspoon and Lamar Peters have combined for 18 of the team's 33 assists through two games this season. Peters has handed out 44 assists and turned in a 4.0 assist-to-turnover ratio over his last six outings. Weatherspoon has upped his scoring to 14.5 points per game and has drained 61.1 percent of his field goal attempts.
5. Tyson Carter has provided 13.0 points, 3.0 steals and 1.5 assists per game. He has started the season with back-to-back games in double figures, the last time Carter accomplished that feat was at Texas A&M (Feb. 20) and against South Carolina (Feb. 24) last season. Mississippi State has won 13 of 15 games and is 19-7 overall when Carter collects 10-plus points.
FROM THE BENCH WITH COACH HOWLAND
"I really liked our defense in both games. I thought we played very good defensively, and I really thought we really imposed our will in the first two games. Our guys are doing a good job getting deflections and playing hard. Our rotations, we're playing extremely hard. You have to be able to adjust to different styles. Every team you play is going to be a little different. I was very pleased with that."
"We have to do a better job not allowing second shots. That is going to be a big thing moving forward because we are playing small. We start with 6-1 and 6-0 guards. Nick plays way bigger than he is because of his heart, his toughness, his strength and his athleticism. The bottom line is we have to get in there, get rebounds and keep them off the glass. I thought offensively we were better in the first game than the second game."
