COLLEGE STATION, Texas – On the final day of opening weekend of SEC play, the Mississippi State Bulldogs (20-5) dropped a pair of hard-fought contests to No. 5 Texas A&M (21-2) to close out their weekend in College Station.
Resuming game two from Saturday, which was suspended due to rain, the Bulldogs looked to rally back as the contest resumed with A&M leading by four in the bottom of the fifth. State put together several opportunities to even the game, including a bases-loaded situation in the top of the seventh, but the home team kept the Dogs at bay, closing out a 5-1 win.
TAMU scored their first run off a fielding error in the bottom of the second and the scored four runs in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead. The Bulldogs' lone run came in the fifth, when Caroline Seitz was hit by pitch with the bases loaded.
Silkwood threw all 6.0 innings for the Bulldogs, tossing a trio of strikeouts and walking three.
A&M struck first in the third game of the series, as a bases-loaded walk pushed them to a 1-0 lead. The Aggies tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third behind a two-run homer to left field.
However, junior pitcher Holly Ward would not be phased, throwing four of her career-high-tying eight strikeouts following the homer and only allowing one batter to reach base safely.
State responded in the fifth frame, loading the bases and then bringing home Sarai Niu off a Kat Moore sac fly to center, her second of the season. MSU would have a couple of opportunities in the last two frames to put more runs on the board, but the Aggies flashed several impressive defensive plays to hold on and win, 3-1.
Calyn Adams led the Bulldogs offensively in the second game of the series, going 2-for-3 for her sixth multi-hit game of the season. Reggie Harrison tallied a hit in each contest, while Bevia Robinson and Adams earned a hit in the series' final matchup.
Also of note, sophomore Sarai Niu was hit by pitch twice between the final two games of the series, moving her career total to 25, passing Sam Lenehan (2011-14) for seventh on State's career list.
MSU returns to action on Wednesday, March 15, as the Bulldogs travel to Conway, Ark., to take on Central Arkansas. First pitch from Farris Field is set for 5 p.m. CT.
