Adams’ Two-RBI Single Sends MSU To Midweek Victory
March 15, 2017 | Softball
CONWAY, Ark. – Once again the late innings belonged to the Maroon and White, as the Mississippi State Bulldogs (21-5) used a seventh-inning two-RBI single from Calyn Adams to take down Central Arkansas (7-19) on Wednesday night.
Closing out a four-game road trip at Farris Field, the junior put together her first and only hit of the night at the best time, sending a single up the middle to score Emily Heimberger and Reggie Harrison to break a tie and give MSU a 3-1 lead.
From there, fellow junior Cassady Knudsen shut down the bears, wrapping up her 2.2 innings of relief work to seal the win and move to 4-2 this year.
Alexis Silkwood made the start for the Dogs and held UCA scoreless for the first 3.2 innings. During that stretch, State was able to earn the game's first run thanks to Harrison's second hit of the day, an RBI double that scored Kat Moore in the third.
UCA responded in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out RBI single to tie things up at 1-1.
The Dogs were able to get runners on over the next two frames, but the Bears used strong defense to kept the game tied up. Then came the seventh.
Katie Anne Bailey notched a pinch-hit lead-off single to get things started. UCA seemed to rebound after getting the next two batters out, but it wouldn't slow down the Bulldogs. Harrison singled to complete her 4-for-4 day and Olivia Golden walked to set up Adams.
After taking the opening pitch for a ball, Adams delivered the game-winner, sending a single up the middle to score a pair of runs and put State in the lead for good, 3-1.
UCA's lead-off batter would reach via walk and then Knudsen would allow nothing more. A lineout-strikeout-groundout sequence shut the door on the Bears and sealed MSU's 21st win of the season.
Harrison's career 4-for-4 night led all players on the day. Moore and Silkwood also tallied multi-hit games, each recording two on the night. Adams recorded her first multi-RBI game of the year and the sixth of her career.
Silkwood would strikeout three and walk one over 4.1 innings of work, leaving with the game tied. Knudsen struck out four and walked three while not allowing a single hit or run as she tied last season's total with her fourth win.
The Bulldogs will now return home this weekend for their first SEC series at Nusz Park, hosting the 8th-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide (24-2, 3-0 SEC). Game one is set for Friday, March 17 at 6 p.m. CT. Saturday's contest will also begin at 6 p.m., while Sunday's series finale is slated for a 2 p.m., first pitch. All three contests will be streamed on the SEC Network +.
