Soccer Set For Friday Home Opener Against Lipscomb
August 25, 2016 | Soccer
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Soccer officially returns to Starkville on Friday, as the Mississippi State Bulldogs (1-1-0) host the Lipscomb Bison (1-0-1) at 7 p.m. CT, from the MSU Soccer Field.
Friday's contest against the Bison will mark the second meeting for the programs. In 2015, the Bulldogs took a 2-0 win in Nashville to earn its second win of the season.
"We're excited to return home for two great matchups this weekend," head coach Aaron Gordon said. "Friday's game against Lipscomb will be a good test for our squad, because Lipscomb is coming off a huge win. We're counting on our great fans to fuel our energy tomorrow night to combat Lipscomb's momentum, but we're excited to get back out on the field and look forward to a great game."
The game will be broadcast on SEC Network+, with live stats provided by HailState.com.
Last Time Out:
The Bulldogs split two games at the Charleston Classic last weekend to open the 2016 season, as MSU downed host College of Charleston, 2-0, before dropping a tough contest to No. 17 Virginia Tech, 2-1. Three players scored for State while in Charleston, as freshmen Johanna Hamblett and MaKayla Waldner, along with junior Khalyn Harmon all earned their first collegiate goals.
Scouting Lipscomb:
The Bison are 1-0-1 on the season after downing Vanderbilt and tying Belmont at home to begin the season. Lipscomb has scored three goals on the season as well, but all their production has come from freshman Olivia Doak. The forward earned Atlantic Sun Player of the Week honors after her six-point performance. In 2015, the Bison recorded their second-straight winning season, after posting a 12-4-4 mark.
Keys For MSU:
The Bulldogs have scored three goals in the first two games this season, something last year's squad didn't accomplish until game five of the season. The key for Friday's game will be for MSU to keep pressure on Lipscomb in the attacking third of the field. Forwards Waldner and Mallory Euabnks will be tasked with that assignment as Hamblett and Kennadi Carbin will bring pressure from the midfield.
Up Next:
After Friday's home-opener, the Bulldogs host UT Martin (0-2-0) on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT. The contest will be the lone game for the Skyhawks on the weekend, as MSU prepares for the quick turnaround.
