MSU Women’s Tennis’ Lee Advances To NCAA Singles Quarterfinals
May 27, 2016 | Women's Tennis
TULSA, Okla. – On the third day of action at the NCAA Individual Championships Friday, Mississippi State women's tennis junior sensation Jasmine Lee advanced to the quarterfinals of the singles bracket with a straight-set upset victory. The State tandem of sophomores Madison Harrison and Kristina Vozniak fell in three sets in their bid to move on in doubles.
Continuing her already record-setting season, the ITA All-American and 13th-ranked Lee posted a convincing 6-4, 7-6(0) upset victory over California's seventh-ranked and sixth-seeded junior Maegan Manasse. Lee broke Manasse at 5-4 to win the first set and dominated the second-set tiebreaker for the triumph. In doing so, the Khaosiung, Taiwan, native became the first MSU women's singles player ever to advance to the NCAA Singles quarterfinals and the first MSU men's or women's player to do so since Bulldog Thomas Dupré in 1998.
Lee, now 32-11 overall in singles in 2015-16, will face Virginia's second-ranked and second-seeded senior Danielle Collins (35-4) in Saturday's NCAA quarterfinals at Noon CT at Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Collins earned her way to the quarterfinals by defeating Ole Miss' 33rd-ranked Arianne Hartono 6-4, 6-0 on Friday. Lee and Collins have never met.
State's 30th-ranked duo of Harrison and Vozniak followed Lee's match Friday, dropping a 4-6, 6-1, 1-0(6) decision to Kentucky's No. 1-ranked and second-seeded Mami Adachi and Aldila Sutjiadi in Friday's Round of 16 action. The pair ends the season with a 7-7 record with four of the wins coming against ranked opponents. Other than 1989 NCAA Doubles Champions Jackie Holden and Claire Pollard, Harrison and Vozniak are the only State women's players to ever reach the NCAA Round of 16 in doubles.
"Today Jasmine played her most focused match of the tournament and was able to raise her level enough for the upset," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "She is playing progressively better and is a threat to anyone in the tournament if she continues to raise her level and play with more confidence. I am proud of Madison and Kristina's effort in a close loss against the No. 1 ranked doubles team in the country. They played with good energy and courage but came up just short in the end. I am very proud of how we are competing here on college tennis' biggest stage."
