NCAA Singles Run For MSU Women’s Tennis’ Lee Ends In Quarterfinals
May 28, 2016 | Women's Tennis
TULSA, Okla. – Ending one of the most successful singles seasons in program history, Mississippi State women's tennis junior Jasmine Lee dropped her quarterfinal-round match Saturday afternoon to end her impressive run in the 2016 NCAA Singles Championship.
MSU's first singles ITA All-American ever as a 9-16 seed in this week's tournament, the 13th-ranked Lee was ousted Saturday by Virginia's second-ranked and second-seeded senior Danielle Collins 7-5, 6-3. Lee fought back from a 5-2 deficit in the first set to make it 5-all, but Collins grabbed the next two games to get the early lead. In the second set, the players stayed on serve until 3-2, when Collins got the one service break she would need to go on and complete the win.
The Khaosiung, Taiwan, native Lee ended her stellar junior season by becoming the first MSU women's singles player aver to advance to the NCAA Singles quarterfinals and the first MSU men's or women's player to do so since Bulldog Thomas Dupré in 1998. The two-time, First Team All-SEC selection joins 1989 NCAA Doubles Champions Jackie Holden and Claire Pollard as the only All-Americans in MSU women's tennis history.
Overall, Lee composed a record of 32-12 this season, taking sole possession of second place in the MSU record book for most singles wins in a season. Of her 32 wins, 23 came against ranked opponents with seven coming in the top 20 and three in the top 10. Lee has been ranked as high as No. 9 nationally twice this season (also an MSU record). The final ITA Individual Rankings will be released next week.
"Jasmine had a great run here in Tulsa," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "She raised her level each round and picked up some solid wins. She had her chances today but in the end it was her opponent who was able to capitalize more often. It was a high level match as expected. I am extremely proud of the season she has had and I look forward to her leading this team next year as a senior."
Lee's setback Wednesday marked the end of one of the most successful seasons for MSU Women's Tennis ever. The Bulldogs went 18-9 overall (second-most wins ever) and finished ranked 23rd nationally as a team after reaching the NCAA Second Round for the second consecutive season. State posted its most SEC victories ever (7) and placed a school-best four players in the NCAA Individual Championships, with Lee reaching the singles quarterfinals, senior Georgiana Patrasc making the second round, and sophomores Madison Harrison and Kristina Vozniak advancing to the Round of 16 in doubles.
