MSU’s Women’s Tennis’ Lee, Harrison/Vozniak Into NCAA Round Of 16
May 26, 2016 | Women's Tennis
TULSA, Okla. – On the second day of action at the NCAA Individual Championships Thursday, Mississippi State women's tennis junior Jasmine Lee, and the doubles tandem of Madison Harrison and Kristina Vozniak, advanced to the Round of 16 with impressive victories. Senior Georgiana Patrasc fell in her bid to advance in singles.
Named MSU's first singles ITA All-American ever this season, the 13th-ranked Lee posted a solid 7-6(3), 6-3 triumph over Duke's No. 55 Kaitlyn McCarthy, becoming the first MSU women's singles player ever to advance to the NCAA Round of 16. Lee will face California's seventh-ranked and sixth-seeded Maegan Manasse in Friday's Round of 16 at 10 a.m. CT.
Manasse earned her way to the round of 16 after holding off Arkansas' 21st-ranked Yuliya Lysa 7-6(6), 6-1 on Thursday. Lee and Manasse have no official results against each other but have matched up once – at the No. 1 position in Cal's NCAA Second Round win over the Bulldogs in 2015. Lee held a 7-6(3), 4-0 lead in that affair when Cal clinched the match and play was suspended.
The 30th-ranked sophomore Bulldog tandem of Harrison and Vozniak made their debut in the NCAA Individuals Wednesday on a great note, rallying to down Northwestern's 28th-ranked Alex Chatt and Maddie Lipp 2-6, 6-0, 1-0(8) to advance to the Round of 16 in the NCAA Doubles Championship. They became only the second State tandem ever to advance to the NCAA Round of 16, joining 1989 NCAA Doubles Champions Jackie Holden and Claire Pollard. Pollard, in her 18th season as head coach at Northwestern, was on court coaching opposite the Bulldogs in Thursday's match.
The State duo will face Kentucky's No. 1-ranked and second-seeded Mami Adachi and Aldila Sutjiadi in Friday's Round of 16 action at a time to be announced. The UK pair earned their way to Friday by outlasting Stanford's 31st-ranked Melissa Lord and Carol Zhao 2-6, 6-2, 1-0(9) Thursday. The duos' only meeting came earlier this year in State's 4-2 dual match win over Kentucky in Starkville. Adachi and Sutjiadi notched a 6-3 win over Harrison and Vozniak at the No. 1 position in that affair.
State's 36th-ranked Patrasc started Thursday's play for State, dropping a 6-2, 6-3 to Virginia's 12th-ranked Julia Elbaba, a 9-16 seed, in the second round. Elbaba claimed several close games in the first set to go up early on. Patrasc was able to fight within 5-3 in the second set before Elbaba finally claimed the match. For the senior Bulldog, the setback ended a storied four-year career in which she was named All-SEC three times and an ITA Scholar Athlete. Also named this year's ITA Southern Region Most Improved Senior, Patrasc stands first all-time at MSU in career singles wins (91), and third in both career doubles wins (63) and all-time combined wins (154). Of her 154 overall wins, 50 of them came in 2015-16 as a senior.
"With two players in the round of 32 and a doubles team competing, today was the longest day ever for Bulldog women's tennis at the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "Georgiana started off her match playing well, but was unable to capitalize on her first 11 game points. Her opponent picked up her game and was just too much at the end. I am very proud of her senior year accomplishments. Jasmine did a good job overcoming a very tricky opponent. She was able to step up at key moments to pick up a solid win. Madison and Kristina lost the big points in the first set, but settled down and played an excellent second set. They trusted themselves and played with great courage to win the match tiebreaker. Overall, it was a great day for us advancing a singles player and doubles team to the final 16 in singles and doubles."
