February 07, 2016 | Women's Tennis
Minneapolis, Minn. – In the championship match of the Courtside Classic, the 29th-ranked Mississippi State women's tennis team (5-1) blanked 41st-ranked DePaul (2-3) 7-0 Sunday to claim the tournament title. The win came on the heels of Saturday's 6-1 victory over No. 63 New Mexico. State's Jasmine Lee was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after she posted a 2-0 record at the No. 2 position in doubles and a 2-0 record at the No. 1 position in singles.
“It was a great weekend for us,” MSU head coach Daryl Greenan said. ”The hospitality was awesome here and I appreciate (Minnesota head coach) Chuck (Merzbacher) inviting us to come participate. I am proud of my girls and the way they competed, beating some good competition.”
State started Sunday's title match continuing its dominant doubles performance at the No. 1 and 2 positions. MSU's duo of Jasmine Lee and Louise Ronaldson defeated DePaul's Marina Cozac and Patricia Lancranjan 6-0 on court 2. At No. 1, State's tandem of Madison Harrison and Georgiana Patrasc upset the Blue Demons' 37th-ranked Rebeca Mitrea and Yuliya Shupenia, also with a 6-0 shutout, to clinch the doubles point and give MSU a 1-0 lead. The remaining doubles match was suspended with State leading 4-3.
MSU carried its dominant performance into singles, sweeping the Blue Demons, the two-time defending Big East champions, at all six positions.
Bulldog sophomore Jennifer Brown belted DePaul's Milica Tesic 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 6 position to extend State's lead to 2-0. Quickly following on court 4, MSU's 36th-ranked rookie Anastasia Rentouli retired the Blue Demons' Zaina Sufi 6-3, 6-0 to give State an early 3-0 lead.
State's 13th-ranked Lee then clinched the match with a convincing 6-1, 6-4 triumph over DePaul's Yuliya Shupenia on court 1.
The Bulldogs would claim wins in the final three matches of the day as well. At the No. 5 position, newcomer Kristina Vozniak ousted DePaul's Jarret Fisher in a hard fought 7-5, 6-4 victory. MSU's Harrison outlasted DU's Lancranjan 6-2, 7-6(4) on court 2. At No. 3, State's Patrasc finished the match with a 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 come-from-behind victory over the Blue Demons' Mitrea, extending her winning streak to seven matches.
MSU returns to action in two weeks with a pair of matches in Birmingham, Ala. The Bulldogs will meet UAB on Friday, February 19, at 2 p.m. and Samford on Saturday, February 20, at 12 p.m.
