MSU?s Lee Dominates To Advance To NCAA Singles Second Round
May 21, 2015 | Women's Tennis
WACO, Texas – In her first year in the Maroon and White, 23rd-ranked Jasmine Lee continues to impress, as the Mississippi State women's tennis star downed Stetson's No. 91 Alizee Michaud, 6-0, 6-4, in the NCAA Singles Championship First Round on Wednesday at Baylor's Hurd Tennis Complex.
Lee's victory sets up a second round showdown with No. 47 Jennifer Brady of UCLA, who upset Florida's third-ranked Brooke Austin 7-6(3), 6-3 Wednesday night. First serve is set for 12:30 p.m. CT., on Thursday.
The first-year Bulldog wasted no time against Michaud, grabbing a break right off the bat to go up 1-0 in the first set. Lee's only trouble of that set would come in the second game, but she would fight off a pair of break chances to hold serve and go on to take the opening set, 6-0.
Wednesday's second set proved to be more of a challenge for Lee, who would not break until late in the frame to pull away. After trading holds up to 3-all, Lee went up 30-40 and looking to break. Michaud would hold serve to go up 4-3, but would not hold again. After holding at love, Lee hit overdrive and broke Michaud to go up 5-4. The All-SEC first-teamer would then hold to close out the match, defeating Michaud 6-0, 6-4.
Lee is now one win away from achieving ITA All-American status, which would make her the first MSU women's tennis All-American since Jackie Holden and Claire Pollard earned the honor in 1989, the same season they claimed the NCAA Doubles Championship.
