Lee?s Rally Falls Short In Three Setter In NCAA Singles Second Round
May 21, 2015 | Women's Tennis
WACO, Texas – An impressive first season at Mississippi State has come to an end for Jasmine Lee, as the No. 23-ranked Bulldog fell in three sets to UCLA's No. 47 Jennifer Brady in Thursday's NCAA Singles Championship Second Round.
Lee attempted an impressive rally after dropping the first set, but came just short of victory, falling to Brady 6-1, 2-6, 6-3. The loss ends Lee's season with a record of 17-8, which was highlighted by seven victories against ranked opponents.
Brady jumped out in front early and would not relinquish her first-set lead, earning a break in the third game of the set. Lee's hold on the first game would be all she could manage in the set, as Brady went on to take the first frame, 6-1.
Despite the rough start, Lee came out in the second on a tear. Two early breaks would put the MSU sophomore up 4-0 in the second before Brady would get on the board with a hold. Brady would fend off several break chances by Lee to hold to 5-2, but she could not break Lee, dropping the second set 6-2.
Brady again found a hot start in the deciding frame. A pair of breaks would push the Bruin's lead to 5-0 and put Lee on the ropes. However, Lee would not be deterred, using a pair of holds and a break to cut Brady's lead to 5-3. Lee put pressure on Brady in the next game, trying to break to put the match back on serve, but could not capitalize, ultimately falling 6-1, 2-6, 6-3.
“I am so proud of what Jasmine has accomplished in her first semester as a Bulldog,” MSU coach Daryl Greenan said. “She has proven herself as one of the best players in college tennis. She played a very solid match today but came up just short. In the end she came within a few games of achieving All-American status. I am excited to see what she will do the next couple years.”
