No. 44 State Women?s Tennis Falls 4-1 At Tennessee
April 04, 2015 | Women's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Following Wednesday's thrilling victory at home against No. 42 Auburn, the No. 44 Mississippi State women's tennis team hit the road looking to follow that up with another triumph, but fell 4-1 in a tough battle to Tennessee on Friday.
MSU dropped to 14-8 and 4-7 in the SEC with the loss, while Tennessee earned its third-straight win, improving to 11-11 and 3-7 in the conference.
Both teams opened the match with an intense battle in doubles play, two matches being decided in tiebreakers. The Lady Vols struck first on court three, as the UT duo of Victoria Olivarez and Tiffany Tavares edged MSU's Timea Guibe and Naomi Tran, 8-6. State's tandem of Jasmine Lee and Louise Ronaldson responded with an impressive 8-7(5) win on No. 2 against UT's Eve Repic and Laurence Guevremont. However, the Lady Vols came away with the doubles point with a tiebreak victory of their own on court one, as the Bulldog duo of Martina Frantova and Georgiana Patrasc fell 8-7(4) to 45th-ranked Joanna Henderson and Caitlyn Williams.
Singles play was close as well and two weather delays ultimately forced play indoors where the match was completed.
The Lady Vols earned the first singles point for a 2-0 lead, as Repic defeated State's 81st-ranked Patrasc in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 on court two. Although the Bulldogs responded with Guibe's 6-3, 6-4 win against Tavares on No. 6, UT earned wins on courts one and four to clinch the match. MSU's Ronaldson fell 7-6(4), 6-2 to Guevremont on court four, while MSU's 56th-ranked sophomore Lee dropped a tough 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 battle on court one to 113th-ranked Henderson in the match clincher.
Play was suspended following the clinch. State's Jennifer Brown led 7-6(6), 4-4 on No. 5 against UT's Olivarez, while MSU's Frantova had just forced a third set on court three against UT's Williams.
State's women return to action on Sunday, April 5, in a 12 p.m. CT battle at No. 5 Georgia. UGA is coming off of a 4-0 victory on Friday against No. 21 Ole Miss. MSU will conclude the regular season at Ole Miss next Saturday.
