McCord Records First Collegiate Win In 10-2 Victory

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Second baseman Ryan Gridley continued his early hitting tear as the No. 13 Mississippi State baseball team moved to 9-0.

This week's Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, Gridley had four hits and two RBIs as MSU knocked off Alcorn State 10-2 in a chilly Tuesday afternoon contest played at Dudy Noble Field.

A native of Milton, Georgia, Gridley became the first Bulldog to take home the weekly award since 2012 after hitting .455 in four victories.

Against Alcorn State, Gridley upped his average to .591 with his fourth multiple-hit game.

The Bulldogs pounded out 14 hits, including multi-hit afternoons by Seth Heck, Jacob Robson and Jake Vickerson. Vickerson also drove in a pair of runs.

Robson has now had five multi-hit games, while Heck joins Gridley with four.

MSU took the lead for good with three runs in the second inning. The Bulldogs then broke open a tight 4-2 affair with three runs in the sixth inning and three more scores in the seventh inning.

The Bulldogs benefited from four errors by the Braves (3-5) and worked around 11 stranded base runners. MSU used heavy dose of the bunting game to help cause some of the errors. The Bulldogs were credited with five sacrifices (four by bunts) and stole six bases.

MSU bunted four times in a three-run, four-hit second inning. An RBI-double by pinch hitter Luke Reynolds and two-run single by Vickerson were the big blows in the sixth inning. Gridley followed with a two-run double in the seventh inning.

Jesse McCord (1-0) was lifted with two outs in the sixth inning but did record the win. Zac Houston, Dakota Hudson and Logan Elliot pitched in relief. McCord allowed three hits and two runs (both earned), with six strikeouts.

Alcorn State finished with five hits. Starting pitcher Jonathan Morales (0-1) was lifted in the fifth inning and took the loss.
