MSU Women's Tennis Falls To 19th-Ranked Vanderbilt

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Looking for its eighth consecutive win of the season, Mississippi State's 72nd-ranked women's tennis team (8-3, 1-1 SEC) dropped a 7-0 match to No. 19 Vanderbilt (6-3, 1-1 SEC) Sunday afternoon at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
"We lost to a very strong team today," said Lady Bulldog Head Coach Daryl Greenan. "We had our moments, but we did not capitalize. Now, we just take this as a lesson and move on."
Vanderbilt was strong from the start, sweeping through the doubles point to grab a 1-0 lead. The Commodore tandem of Catherine Newman and Erica Robertson defeated the MSU duo of Radka Ferancova and Mariia Ryzhova 8-2, while the Lady Bulldog team of Valeriya Makarycheva and Danielle Terpko fell to VU's Keilly Ulery and Chelsea Preeg, 8-3 at the third court. Lady Bulldog teammates Olesya Tsigvintseva and Natalia Mayuk also fell, 8-3, at the top spot to the Commodore duo of Heather Steinbauer and Rachael Dillon.
That strong showing in doubles carried over into singles, as the Commodores grabbed wins on all six courts. MSU made it fairly close at the four, five and six positions, but Vanderbilt still proved too much for the Lady Bulldogs.
The tightest match of the day came at court No.6, where State's Terpko rebounded from a first-set loss to grab a win in the tie-breaker second. Terpko's valiant effort then fell short in the super set, as she took a 6-0, 6-7(3), 10-8 loss to VU's Blatt. Meanwhile, Makarycheva took her contest into a third frame, before losing to Dillon 4-6, 6-0, 6-0. Playing against the 107th-ranked Steinbauer, Lady Bulldog Mayuk lost a 6-1, 6-3, 6-0 contest.
State went down in straight sets on the remaining one, two and four courts.
The Lady Bulldogs continue SEC play next weekend as they travel to LSU and Arkansas for a pair of away contests. The match against LSU is Friday at 3 p.m. CT, while play with the Razorbacks is slated for a Noon start.
