FIU Downs Lady Bulldogs In Tight 4-3 Match

MIAMI, Fla. - Mississippi State's 54th-ranked women's tennis team (9-5, 1-3 SEC) could not make it past No. 41 Florida International (10-6) Saturday morning, falling to the Eagles, 4-3, in a tight contest at the FIU Tennis Courts.
The Lady Bulldogs picked up one victory in doubles, as the duo of Radka Ferancova and Danielle Terpko ousted the FIU tandem of Maria Vallasciani and Magali Holt, 8-6, at court No. 2. That lone win was not enough; however, as the Panthers took victories on the remaining two courts. FIU's team of Liset Brito and Priscella Castillo defeated the top MSU duo of Olesya Tsigivntseva and Natalia Mayuk, 8-1, while Christine Seredni and Maria Spenceley took an 8-4 triumph against MSU's tandem of Mariia Ryzhova and Valeriya Makarycheva.
Up 1-0, FIU needed just three wins in singles to clinch the match and win its second straight over a ranked opponent. Although Mississippi State put up a valiant effort, the Panthers found those needed victories to take the match in a 4-3 thriller.
84th-ranked Brito took a strong 6-0, 6-0 triumph against State's Olesya Tsigvintseva at the top spot, while the Panthers picked up wins at courts four and six to take the contest. Castillo ousted MSU's Ryzhova 6-1, 2-6, 6-1, and FIU's Vallasciani took a 6-2, 6-2 win over Terpko at the sixth position.
State's three wins in singles came at courts two, three and five. At No. 2, Ferancova took a 6-3, 2-6, 10-1 victory over Seredini, while at No. 3 Mayuk ousted Spenceley 0-6, 6-4, 7-5. Meanwhile, State's Makarycheva defeated Holt 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 5.
Mississippi State returns to conference action next weekend when it plays host to Florida next Friday at 2 p.m. CT at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
