Solid Team Effort Leads MSU Women's Tennis To 4-1 Triumph Over GSU
February 12, 2010 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State's 58th-ranked women's tennis team (2-1) used a strong effort to pick up its second win versus a ranked opponent this season in a 4-1 victory over No. 57 Georgia State (0-5) Friday afternoon at McCarthy Gymnasium.
"Obviously, we are proud to pick up our second win versus another quality opponent," said Lady Bulldog head coach Daryl Greenan. "I thought we really set the tone early and came out ready to compete."
Georgia State started the match short-handed with only five players, and as a result MSU won two contests by default. One was in singles, as Lady Bulldog Jordan Zachary was credited the win at the No. 6 position to give Mississippi State a 1-0 advantage before play began. In doubles, the Lady Bulldogs took a default win at the No.3 position. That victory was given to the duo of Zachary and Elizabeth Hall.
From there, MSU needed just one win to clinch the doubles point. Playing at the two-court McCarthy Gymnasium, they quickly went to work. The Lady Bulldog tandem of Olesya Tsigvintseva and Natalia Mayuk ousted the GSU pair of Diana Nakic and Linda Hircistova 8-3, giving MSU the elusive point. The contest at court No.2 was then suspended with the Lady Bulldog duo of Radka Ferancova and Mariia Ryzhova holding a 5-3 advantage.
Up 2-0 after doubles, Mississippi State looked to the singles courts for two more wins to clinch the match. Senior Ferancova delivered at the second position with 6-1, 6-3 triumph over GSU's Lerova. Meanwhile, 42nd-ranked Nakic of the Panthers proved too much for Tsigvintseva, taking a 6-2, 6-2 win to give GSU its first point and put the contest at 3-1.
Mayuk then clinched the match on court No. 3. She ousted Kir Kemp of GSU 6-2, 6-1 to give MSU the 4-1 triumph. Ryzhova's contest against Gresova was then suspended with the Lady Bulldog up 6-3, 4-3.
Mississippi State will be back in action next Thursday, Feb. 18, at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Center against Samford. Match time is slated for 2 p.m. CT.
