Seventh-Ranked Miami Too Much For Lady Bulldogs

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Mississippi State's women's tennis team (1-1) wrapped up play at the 2010 ITA Kick-Off Weekend Sunday afternoon with a 7-0 loss to seventh-ranked Miami (2-0).
"I am still very proud of the way the girls played the whole week," said coach Greenan. "There is no doubt that Miami is a top-ten team, but our girls competed and we actually had some opportunities to win some sets. I am just proud of the effort of the whole weekend, and the girls continue to play great tennis."
The Hurricanes took control from the start and never looked back, after both teams decided to play singles before doubles because of the threat of rain.
In singles, UM took wins on the first four courts to quickly take the match. MSU's Olesya Tsigvintseva lost 6-1, 6-2 to UM's No. 7 rated Laura Vallverdu, while teammates Radka Ferancova and Valeriya Makarycheva both fell in straight sets on courts two and three. Miami then clinched the match with Danielle Mills' 6-0, 6-4 triumph over State's Mariia Ryzhova.
The last two courts were closer down the stretch. However, Miami was still too much for the Lady Bulldogs. UM's Gabriela Mejia defeated MSU's Natalia Mayuk 6-2, 7-6, while Claudia Wasilewski fought off several set points from State's Danielle Terpko to eventually take a 7-5, 7-6 win.
It was much of the same in doubles; as each State tandem fell, to give Miami the doubles point and the 7-0 victory.
Mississippi State returns home now for the first of seven-straight home matches. The Lady Bulldogs take on Georgia State Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. CT. Admission to all MSU home matches is free.
