State Women's Tennis Topples College Of Charleston 5-2 In Season Opener
January 30, 2010 | Women's Tennis
CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Coach Daryl Greenan and the Mississippi State women's tennis team (1-0) picked up a solid win over 62-ranked College of Charleston (0-1) Saturday morning to give the new Lady Bulldog coach his first victory in his first match at the helm of the program.
"It is a great feeling and really hard-earned win today," said coach Greenan. "I thought the girls came out with great energy and we worked hard on every court. College of Charleston was a tough team and the match could have gone either way, but our girls stepped up and I am extremely proud of them."
Mississippi State started with a strong effort in doubles competition, after falling behind early. The State pair of Olesya Tsigvintseva and Mariia Ryzhova fell 8-5 on court No.1 to the 44th-ranked Cougar tandem of Holly Dowse and Emma Hayman. From there, MSU quickly rebounded with an 8-4 win on the third court by Valeriya Makarycheva and Danielle Terpko, who defeated Caroline Newman and Irene Viana of the Cougars.
Finally, the Lady Bulldogs clinched the doubles point with Radka Ferancova and Natalia Mayuk's 8-5 triumph over the C of C pair of Kinsey Casey and Keely Mulligan on court No. 2.
With a 1-0 lead after doubles, MSU went to work on the singles end where it did not start off great for the Lady Bulldogs as Makarycheva fell 6-0, 6-2 to Newman from the Cougars, tying the match up at 1-1. MSU rebounded; however, to grab two quick wins on courts five and six. State's Mayuk ousted Mulligan 7-5, 6-4, before freshman teammate Danielle Terpko took a tough 7-5, 2-6, 6-0 win on court No. 6.
With the score at 3-1 in favor of MSU, College of Charleston inched closer as Casey took a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over State's Mariia Ryzhova at the No. 4 position.
The Lady Bulldogs then clinched the match when Tsigvintseva ousted Dowse 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 on court No. 1. Ferancova then made the final score 5-2 when she defeated Hayman 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 at No. 2.
With the win, it is the second-consecutive season-opening victory for the Lady Bulldogs, who own a 23-12 overall record in season-opening affairs.
