- Assistant Coach
Entering his fifth season as an assistant coach for the Lady Bulldogs, Max Fomine looks to build on a young coaching career with an already impressive profile as a former Mississippi State player. Three years removed from earning his general business degree from MSU, Fomine assists Head Coach Daryl Greenan in continuing State's success in the NCAAs after being a four-year NCAA Tournament team participant himself.
Resourcing from his collegiate playing career at State, Fomine bids to help return the Lady Bulldog tennis program back to competing for championships and earning NCAA berths.
Following graduation from MSU in 2004, Fomine relocated to Hilton Head, S.C., to teach private tennis lessons at Smith & Stearn Tennis Academy at Sea Pines Resort. While in South Carolina, Fomine had the opportunity to work with tennis legend Stan Smith. Prior to returning to his alma mater in January 2006, Fomine also spent time instructing at the Ontario Racquet Club in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where he gave private lessons, developed exercise programs and organized youth tennis camps.
A letterwinner on the MSU men's tennis team from 2001-04, Fomine played under former State men's tennis head coach Sylvain Guichard and Andy Jackson. In his junior year, he was ranked as high as 84th in the national singles rankings, while registering a team high 22 singles wins. Donning the maroon and white, Fomine was also named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll twice.
Fomine's other credentials include being a former hitting partner for tennis pros Jennifer Capriati and Chanda Rubin, along with being ranked 14th at the 2000 Canadian Men's Open in his pre-MSU days.
The Teraspol, Moldova native (former USSR) fled with his family to Canada in December 1993 when the Russian-Moldovian civil war broke out in his home country. The family settled in Toronto, where he was raised and where the family still resides. The European native is fluent in five languages, including Russian, Polish, Ukrainian, Yugoslavian and English. Prior to his collegiate playing days, Fomine prepped at Philip Popcock Secoundary Catholic School in Toronto. He also finished second on the Nike and Rolex circuits, winning over 50 tournaments between the two tours.
Fomine married the former Elina Smirnova Dec. 21, 2007 in Kherson, Ukraine. Fomine is the son of Sergei Fomine and the late Irina Fomina, and has one brother Sergei Fomine, Jr.
