Oboniye, Pitta Wrap Up Run at The ITA All-American Championships

Cary, N.C. – Mississippi State's Gianna Oboniye and Athina Pitta opened the Bulldogs' fall campaign with a strong showing against some of the nation's top competition at the ITA All-American Championships.
The Bulldog duo opened doubles action by advancing out of the prequalifying draw before moving into qualifying. Oboniye and Pitta, the No. 6 seed in the prequalifying draw, advanced past Marshall's Alina Mokrynska and Isabelle Walker in the Round of 16 to earn their place in qualifying.
The pair picked up one of their biggest wins of the tournament against No. 45 Olivia Center and Ahmani Guichard of UCLA. After dropping the opening set 7-5, the Bulldogs responded with a dominant 6-1 second set before taking the match in a 10-point tiebreaker, 10-3. Their doubles run came to an end in the following round of qualifying, bringing a close to a week that saw the pair battle through the prequalifying draw and adding another ranked victory to their résumé.
Competing in the qualifying draw, Oboniye earned a spot in the 64-player main draw after defeating UCLA's Guichard 6-4, 6-3 in the final round of qualifying. The victory sent Oboniye into the main draw of the ITA All-American Championships for the first time in her career.
Oboniye faced No. 11 Jana Hossam of Florida in the opening round and took down one of the tournament's top seeds in straight sets. The California native controlled the match from the start, earning a 6-2, 6-4 victory to advance to the Round of 32. The victory over Hossam marked one of the highest-ranked singles wins of Oboniye's career.
Oboniye's run eventually moved into the consolation draw, where she battled Virginia's Vivian Yang. Yang claimed the match 6-2, 7-6(1) to bring Oboniye's singles run in Cary to a close.
The Bulldogs now turn their attention to the remainder of the fall slate after opening the season in Cary.
