Perry’s Late Equalizer Ends Match In Draw Against Auburn
September 21, 2025 | Soccer
STARKVILLE – Ally Perry was the hero once again. With Mississippi State trailing to Auburn and just 2:06 left in the game, Perry scored to even the match at 1-1.
The Bulldogs outshot the Tigers, 9-3, over the final 30 minutes of the match, fighting back to claim a critical point. After Perry's equalizer, State got three more shots off in the final 90 seconds of play with the best look coming from Laila Murillo's shot that was saved with just 32 seconds left in the game.
"Obviously, this was another opportunity for us to get better and grow," head coach Nick Zimmerman said. "I thought the adjustments we made throughout the game and how we finished is a testament to the players and their ability to adjust on the fly. We had really good chances to score and push for the winner at the end. I'm just proud of the resilience from the group. We use every game as an opportunity to grow and tonight was a step in the right direction."
A scoreless first half saw Mississippi State fire three shots, two of which were blocked. Meanwhile, the Tigers shot four times, putting three on target. Sarah Wommack made three saves, including a leaping touch over the bar and a diving grab. Despite that, the Bulldogs dominated possession, holding the ball for 61 percent of the first 45 minutes.
MSU's best offensive chance of the first half came in 15th minute as the Bulldogs nearly caught the Auburn keeper out of her net. Zoe Main beat the defenders to the ball and sidestepped the keeper, but her shot from 25 yards out rolled just wide of the left post.
Auburn opened the scoring in the 58th minute, marking just the second time all year that the Bulldogs have not scored first. A flurry of three shots in a row were saved by Wommack, blocked by Naila Schoefberger and then subsequently put into the net while Wommack was still on the turf.
Aside from the lone goal, Wommack was brilliant. She made an MSU-career-high six saves to close her week out with nine total saves over the two matches while registering shutout victory and the draw.
"Yeah, that's what we see in training from not only Sarah, but all of our goalkeepers," Zimmerman added. "She made some big-time saves."
The Bulldogs will now travel to Columbia, Missouri, to take on another set of Tigers. State and Missouri will meet on Friday night, Sept. 26 with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. CT on SEC Network+.
