Record-Setting Opening Round Propels Dawgs To Mason Rudolph Championship Lead

FRANKLIN, Tenn. – The Mississippi State women's golf squad had a historic opening to the Mason Rudolph Championship, as they lead the field after 18 holes at 16-under par.
The Dawgs' round of 16-under was the lowest opening round score and the third-lowest round in program history. Four of the five Bulldogs in the lineup carded rounds in the 60s, making them the first group to do such in the Charlie Ewing era. The Bulldogs were just one of three teams to shoot under par in the first day of action.
Ines Belchior made an impact in the first collegiate round of her career. She holds a share of the individual lead at 5-under after carding a team-leading 7 birdies. Alongside Belchior is fellow freshman Moa Stridh. Stridh collected her second par or better round of the season after a bogey-free opening round.
Avery Weed sits in a tie for fifth after opening the tournament with a 4-under round. collected the 35th par or better round of her career on Friday, the fifth-most of any golfer in program history, after opening the Mason Rudolph Championship at 4-under. The round also marked her 14th career round in the 60s.
Samantha Whateley shot her second consecutive round under par after firing a 2-under 69. She has now collected 15 par or better rounds in her career, seven of those coming in the 60s. Whateley sits in a tie for 10th Izzy Pellot rounded out the lineup with a round of 1-under, her first par or better round of the year.
The Bulldogs will look to capitalize on their hot start to the Mason Rudolph Championship as they enter the second round with a seven-stroke lead over tournament host, Vanderbilt.
