State Suffers First Loss At Baylor

WACO, Texas – No. 17 Mississippi State was shut out on the road at Baylor on Thursday night for its first loss of the season, falling by a 2-0 score.

The Bulldogs (2-1-0) were on their heels early, and surrendered a penalty kick in the first minute. However, Sarah Wommack guessed right and made the diving stop. The seal would be broken just three minutes later though when Baylor's Olivia Hess scored from distance, putting a shot from just outside the box in the bottom right corner of the net.

In the 16th minute, Ally Perry's attempt clanged off the crossbar, but it was State's best look of the half. The Bulldogs were outshot, 12-5, in the first 45 minutes, and Wommack was asked to make four saves. MSU's defense successfully defended eight corners in the first half, including three in a row in the 29th minute.

"Tonight's a great opportunity for us to learn and grow," head coach Nick Zimmerman said. "We know we have a young team against a really senior-laden team, so this was a great experience for us. You know, there's going to be things that we've got to continue to work on – our non-negotiables, but this is a tough place to play against a team that's very, very old and senior-laden. This is something that as a young group, this is part of our process, part of the design of why we play these games. We're going to continue to look at the film. We'll get back to work, and we're excited to get back on Sunday."

MSU was significantly more aggressive in the second half and limited the Bears to just four shots and one corner. Late in the second half, Baylor (2-0-2) got the insurance goal it was looking for. A shot from distance on the break in the 82nd minute crossed up Wommack and trickled past her into the net.

Perry led the offense with three shots, but only Kara Harris put an attempt on frame.

The Bulldogs remain on the road for the rest of the week. They are bound for Stillwater, Oklahoma, on Friday to prepare for their second road match of the year. MSU will kick off at Oklahoma State at noon CT on Sunday.
