
No. 20 Women’s Golf Set To Tee Off At Gold Canyon Regional

STARKVILLE – Mississippi State women's golf is set to tee off in the NCAA Tournament for the fifth straight season, as they kick off the NCAA Gold Canyon Regional on Monday, May 5.
The tournament will be held at the Superstition Mountain Golf Club in Gold Canyon, Arizona. The par-72 course plays 6,554 yards. The Bulldogs will hold the early tee times on the back nine, as State will kick off at 8 a.m. local time and 10 a.m. CT.
Avery Weed sits atop of the Bulldog lineup. She is making her second appearance in the NCAA Tournament. In the Bermuda Run Regional last year, she finished 4-over par, including an opening round of 1-under. This season, she has led the Bulldogs in multiple categories, including a scoring average of 71.67. The sophomore was recently named an All-SEC Second Team member.
Izzy Pellot sits in the second spot for the Maroon and White. Pellot has appeared in the NCAA Tournament in all three seasons of her collegiate career. Her best postseason score came at the Westfield Regional her freshman season, where she finished 1-over par after shooting 1-under in the first and second rounds. Pellot enters the tournament after firing off a 3-under round in the final round of stroke play at the SEC Championship.
Samantha Whateley sits in the middle of the lineup. Even though Whateley will be making her first appearance in NCAA regional action, she boasts two rounds of NCAA Tournament experience after subbing in the Bulldog lineup for the final two days of the NCAA Championship last season. Whateley has played some of the best golf of her young collegiate career this spring, including a T3 finish at the Chevron Collegiate. She finished 10-under par across the course of the tournament, including setting and tying her best 18-hole score of 4-under in the first and second rounds.
Chiara Horder is fourth in the State order. Horder has also appeared in the NCAA Tournament every season of her career and will be making her second appearance in the postseason as a Bulldog. Horder's best postseason finish came during her sophomore season at Texas Tech, where she finished the Pullman Regional at 6-under par, which included a pair of rounds in the 60s in the first two days.
Ana Pina Ortega will round out the Bulldog five. She is the lone Bulldog to have never played in the NCAA Tournament. However, Pina Ortega will make her debut after playing her best regular season of golf throughout her four-year career. She has shot 72.78 on the season, carded 10 or better rounds and shot in the 60s three times, all of which are single-season bests. She shot a career-best round of 5-under in the PDI Intercollegiate en route to earning her best tournament score of 7-under.
The Gold Canyon Regional will kick off on Monday, May 5 and will conclude on Wednesday, May 7. The top five teams from each region will advance to the NCAA Championship, The then 30-team field will then conclude their seasons at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California beginning on May 16.
