
Weed Leads State In Opening Round Of NCAA Championship

CARLSBAD, Calif. – After the opening round of action at the North Course of Omni La Costa Resort & Spa, the Mississippi State women's golf team sits in a tie for 13th at 6-over par. Avery Weed led the Bulldogs in the opening round with a round of 3-under.
Five holes into the day, Weed sat at 1-over par but would quickly change her fortune. She birdied holes 15, 16 and 17 consecutively to make the turn at 2-under par. She then strung together a trifecta of birdies on holes 3, 5 and 6 on the front to shave another stroke by the end of her day.
Weed's opening round of 69 marked her ninth round in the 60s on the season, the fifth most by a golfer in a single season in program history. She has now finished par or better in 18 of 31 rounds played this season, which is the fourth-best mark of any golfer in program history.
The Bulldogs enter the second day of the NCAA Championship tied with Michigan State and Virginia at 6-over. The Bulldogs sit within three strokes of the top eight, which is currently held by Tennessee and Northwestern at 3-over par.
The Bulldogs look to climb in the second round of the NCAA Championship tomorrow, May 17. State will start the second round on the front nine at 10:20 a.m. CT. Live scoring for the event is available at scoreboard.clippd.com.
