Bulldogs Jump Seven Spots, Weed Leads After Two Rounds Of NCAA Championship
May 17, 2025 | Women's Golf
CARLSBAD, Calif. – The Mississippi State women's golf squad climbed into sixth place after shooting 2-under in the second round of the NCAA Championship, bringing their two-day total to 4-over. A trio of Bulldogs shot under-par on Saturday, including Avery Weed, who leads the way through 36 holes.
Â
Weed shot her second straight round in the 60s, finishing the second day with a 4-under par 68 and bringing her to 7-under through two days of action. She becomes the first Bulldog in program history to open the NCAA Championship with two rounds in the 60s. She also becomes the third Bulldog to record 10 or more in a single season, joining Julia Lopez Ramirez and Ally Ewing as the only two others to do such. Weed sits two-strokes ahead of the field going into the third day of action.
Â
"Playing in the morning today, we were hoping for a little less wind than we had in the afternoon yesterday, so we felt like we could really go out there and get some birdies early and I did do that," Weed said when asked about her round. "I started out three under through four, and rode that the rest of the round as the wind kind of got more intense."
Â
State was just one of six teams to shoot under-par in the second round of action. Stanford, Northwestern, USC, Florida State and South Carolian joined the Bulldogs in doing such. No team climbed less than six spots during the day.
Chiara Horder moved inside the top 20 of the leaderboard after finishing her day at 2-under par, her 12th par or better round of the season. Horder collected four birdies with just two bogeys, which was the second fewest of any Bulldog behind Weed. She sits in a tie for 13th at 1-under going into the third round of action.
Â
Ana Pina Ortega was the biggest mover for State in the second round, as she climbed 58 spots after shooting 1-under. Pina Ortega has now extended her single-season career best of par or better rounds, which now sits at 11.
Â
The Bulldogs are nine stokes of tomorrow's projected cutline of 13-over, which is currently held by Florida and UCLA. The top 15 teams will advance to play in the fourth round of stroke play. After that fourth round, the top eight of the leaderboard will advance to the match play portion of the tournament and the top player of the leaderboard will be named the NCAA Individual Champion.
Â
The Bulldogs look to climb in the second round of the NCAA Championship tomorrow, May 17. State will start the second round on the front nine at 10:20 a.m. CT. Live scoring for the event is available at scoreboard.clippd.com.
