Dominant Second Quarter Propels State To Education Day Victory Over Georgia State
November 07, 2025 | Women's Basketball
STARKVILLE – The Mississippi State Bulldogs moved to 2-0 on the season after earning a 26-point victory over the Georgia State Panthers. The game saw a crowd of over 6,000, as local schools from the area packed Humphrey Coliseum for Education Day.
"This game gives you goosebumps," coach Sam Purcell said. "This is a great game for the state. Today, some kids were able to get on a bus with their classmates and come to a game for the first time.
Favour Nwaedozi led the Bulldogs with a career-high 17 points and collected her second double-double with 10 rebounds. She shot 70 percent from the field and went 3-3 from the charity stripe. She also collected two blocks.
"After the first game, coach Fred Castro pulled me in the gym and worked with me. I was able to slow down this game."
Destiney McPhaul collected 13 points on 5-7 shooting from the field and 3-5 shooting from distance, marking her second-straight game with 10-plus points.
Freshmen Jaylah Lampley and Madison Francis both finished in double-figures. Lampley collected career highs of 12 points and seven rebounds, while Francis finished with career-highs of 10 points and seven boards.
"They don't play like freshmen, they're just relentless," Purcell said about the duo. "They want to come in and help this program win and that's exactly what you are watching."
Awa Fane scored a career-high 11 points, including knocking down a trifecta of threes, all coming in the second quarter.
"Awa never gets too high or low," Purcell said. "After she only playing two minutes in last game, [Assistant A.D./Recruiting Operations] Jimmy Yu called me. He said Awa is in the gym, on the gun and never went home."
The atmosphere was electric, but it was not lost on the players of what they experienced on Education Day.
"It was an amazing opportunity," Lampley said. "We're grateful almost every school in Starkville came to support us. When the crowd has energy, it helps us perform.
The Bulldogs will cap off an electric weekend in Starkvegas on Sunday, as they welcome Mississippi Valley State to The Hump. Tipoff for the contest is set for 2 p.m. on SECN+.
