ORLANDO, Fla. – Mississippi State men's tennis continues to make its mark on the national stage as three Bulldogs, Petar Jovanovic, Benito Sanchez Martinez and Bryan Hernandez Cortes qualified for the 2025 NCAA Individual Championships, held Nov. 18–23 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
Mississippi State is one of just six programs nationally to feature three players in the singles draw, and one of only three schools to have at least two players competing in both singles and doubles.
Qualifiers and How They Earned Their Spots
Petar Jovanovic
Singles: Finalist at the ITA Southern Regional Championships (Tuscaloosa, Ala.)
Doubles: Qualified by reaching the semifinals of the ITA All-American Championships (Tulsa, Okla.), where he and Sanchez Martinez went on to win the ITA All-American Championship Doubles title.
Benito Sanchez Martinez
Singles: Finalist at the ITA Southern Regional Championships (Tuscaloosa, Ala.)
Doubles: Qualified by reaching the semifinals of the ITA All-American Championships (Tulsa, Okla.), where he and Jovanovic ultimately claimed the ITA All-American Championship Doubles crown.
Bryan Hernandez Cortes
Singles: Semifinalist at the ITA Southern Regional Championships (Athens, Ga.), securing his first NCAA Singles Championship berth.
Fall Success Leading into Nationals
The Bulldogs' fall campaign has been one of the most successful in recent program history. Sanchez Martinez went undefeated in singles at the ITA Southern Regionals and partnered with Jovanovic to win five ranked doubles matches, including two top-15 victories, en route to the ITA All-American Championship crown — the pair's third All-American honor.
Jovanovic mirrored that success, stringing together five straight singles wins to reach the ITA Southern Regional final and capturing the ITA All-American Doubles title alongside Sanchez Martinez — also earning his third career All-American recognition.
Hernandez Cortes continued his breakout season by finishing Top 3 at the ITA Southern Regional Championships and going undefeated at the ITA South Sectional Championships, earning his NCAA Singles Championship bid with a quarterfinal victory.
Bulldog Tradition at the NCAA Championships
Mississippi State has a proud history at the NCAA Individual Championships, including:
In recent years, the duo of Jovanovic and Sanchez Martinez has carried that tradition forward. They reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship in both 2024 and 2025, becoming only the second Bulldog tandem ever to achieve back-to-back quarterfinal appearances — joining the legendary pair of Nuno Borges and Strahinja Rakic (2018 & 2019).
Roberts' Consistency on the National Stage
Since taking over in 2015, head coach Matt Roberts has guided 13 different Bulldogs to the NCAA Individual Championships, continuing Mississippi State's reputation as one of the nation's most consistent programs.
Top Finishes Under Roberts' Guidance
Mississippi State's trio of Jovanovic, Sanchez Martinez and Hernandez Cortes will look to extend that legacy in Orlando as they represent the Maroon and White against the nation's best.

Why The Championship Is In The Fall
The 2025 fall tennis season marks the second year of a two-year pilot program designed by the NCAA Division I Competition Oversight Committee and the ITA, which positions the NCAA Division I Individual Championships in November rather than in May following the NCAA Team Championships. Hosted at Baylor University in November of 2024, this year's NCAA Individual Championships will take athletes to Lake Nona, Florida where they will compete at the USTA National Campus. These championships will take place from November 19-23, while the NCAA Team Championships will be held in Athens, Georgia from May 14-17, 2026.
