State Soccer Welcomes Tennessee Tech For Senior Night
August 28, 2024 | Soccer
State (3-1-0) comes into the matchup ranked 22nd by TopDrawerSoccer and looks to continue to build into the final stretch of non-conference play. After securing two wins at the MSU Soccer Field to start the season over Baylor and Northwestern State, the Dawgs made their way to the Tar Heel State for week two of action. The Dawgs split results in North Carolina, earning a win at Charlotte before narrowly conceding a late goal against Wake Forest in the 84th minute to fall 2-1, their first loss of the season.Â
MSU has offered a very balanced and deep offensive attack to begin the 2024 season with all eight goals coming courtesy of eight different Bulldogs. Notably during the North Carolina swing, a pair of freshmen Dawgs, Kennedy Husbands and Kara Harris, netted their first collegiate goals and were game changers for State.
On the defensive, the back line and co. has offered a SEC leading three sheets to begin the 2024 season and have held opponents to only 6.8 shots per game and are allowing only 0.50 goals per contest.
On the other side of the pitch, the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles (0-3-1) are the reigning back-to-back Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) Champions. Tech players to watch for include forward Katie Toney, the reigning OVC Forward of the Year, who was the conference's leader in assists and ranked second in goals last season. Meredith Nye, a four-time All-OVC selection, and sophomore Neve Renwick, the OVC Freshman of the Year, are also vital to Tech's success. Nye tied her career high with three goals in 2023, while Renwick led the OVC with 79 shots, marking a standout rookie season. With 12 returning players from last year's squad, Tech is poised to maintain its strong presence in the OVC. The Golden Eagles' solid core and recent successes mark an exciting matchup under the StarkVegas lights.
Fans are encouraged to arrive early as senior night festivities are set to begin at 6:12 p.m. with the match kicking off at 6:30 p.m. Fans unable to attend can stream the game via SECN+ or follow along with StatBroadcast.
Making A Difference
The 2024 senior class has combined for an impressive 471 games played, 33 goals, 24 assists, and 33,182 minutes. Their contributions have been pivotal, including achieving three SEC Tournament appearances—highlighted by a spot in the semifinals for the first time in 2023 and the program's first win in the tournament in 2022. This group has also led the team to back-to-back NCAA Tournament hosts in 2022 and 2023, reaching the Sweet 16 in 2023, another program first. With 38 combined wins, four consecutive Magnolia Cup victories, and numerous individual accolades including six All-Region honors and eight All-SEC honors, this class has left a lasting impact. They have set records for the highest class GPA in program history (3.71), the longest SEC win (4) and unbeaten streak (6) in 2023, the highest rankings in program history (#11 TopDrawerSoccer & #14 United Soccer Coaches), and conceded the fewest goals in a season (14) in 2023.Â
